I will miss Velda. She was very kind and gracious to me. I am just the wife of one of her grandsons... and yet she took the time to write, send me a birthday card and a gift every year since I married Tom 25 years ago. Tom and I are grateful that our sons ages 19 and 16 have many wonderful memories of their GreatMom! We will especially remember her at Christmas time. Her Christmas cookies were always fought over when the package arrived from Newton to our home in California.
May she always be remembered for her devotion to her family.
NEWTON
Velda Sharp, 93, died May 6, 2007, at Newton Medical Center, Newton.
She was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Castleton, the daughter of John and MaryAnn Hyson DeNoon.
A resident of Newton, she was a homemaker. She was a Auxiliary member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and she attended a neighborhood Bible study.
On Oct. 3, 1931, she married Charles Sharp in Hutchinson. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include: a son, Norman, Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Charlotte Sharp Stephens, Newton, and Shirlee Larson, Blue Springs, Mo.; 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a brother, six sisters and a grandson.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel, Newton, with Chaplain Bill Regier presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home, 215 North Main, Newton, KS 67114.

Tribute to Miriel
I want to take the time to acknowledge the passing of my best friend's grandmother. I had a lot of respect for Miriel and enjoyed the times I was in her presence. I met her about 12 years ago when Erin and I were studying at UCIrvine together. She was a very vivacious woman and it is hard to believe that she is no longer with us.
I wish peace, love, and healing to her surviving family.
Miriel Ring-Roberts
RING-ROBERTS, MIRIEL Born Miriel Mary McCall on February 16, 1921 in Denver, CO. Except for the few weeks following birth she lived in the state of California all her life. She moved to Beaumont, CA in 1954. She was active in the School PTA's during her children's school years and she was a charter member of the Pass Players. She worked for five years as secretary for Beaumont Presbyterian Church and she worked for 25 years as an administrative assistant for the Beaumont Library. She was active in the community, a member of the Beaumont Women's Club and a board member of the Laura May Stewart Foundation. She was an avid bridge player and belonged to the Inland Valley Duplicate Bridge Unit #534. She is survived by her husband, Morgan Roberts; her sister, Peggy Fought of La Crescenta, CA; her daughters, Connie Ring of Beaumont and Rexanne Ring of S. Lake Tahoe, CA; her granddaughter, Erin Ring-Howell of Stamford, CT; and her great-granddaughter Rhianna Ring-Howell of Stamford, CT. She is preceded in death by her husband Rex C. Ring. Mrs. Ring-Roberts passed away in her home on October 6, 2006. The memorial service will be held at Beaumont Presbyterian Church on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 4:30 pm. Banning (951)849-4527

Cemetery Day...
Lena took us over to the Cemetery today. It was a cultural experience I will not soon forget.
Lena asked me not to bring my camera and I am glad that I didn't. It would have been disrespectful. There were thousands of people going to and from the cemetery in town. There is only one that is still open in Krasnodar.
At the cemetery:
people were cleaning graves
eating, drinking and toasting with family and friends
laying flowers on the graves
many of the graves had full body pictures of the deceased on the head stone.
children and old people were begging for money
bands were playing and had hats or boxes out for people to put in money
many of the graves had a picnic table and bench for people to sit at and eat
a band was playing "strangers in the night"
a grave of a child had a fence around it that was shaped like a train
some graves were overgrown and abandoned
others were filled with so many flowers you could not see the name on the headstone.
We walked through the cemetery just looking and observing for over an hour. We found the grave of a woman that no one had attended to and layed four tulips on it. Flowers are given in even numbers for death.
We chose a woman's grave to honor because I found out earlier today that a friend of mine from highschool had passed away three weeks ago. I don't know any other way to honor Margaret than to be the kind of person she was. She was giving. She was caring. She took in anyone who needed a home. She was there for me when my brother passed away. She was there when my grandmother and mother were in the hospital. Here is her notice from the Wichita Eagle newspaper. Our trip to the cemetery was more than just a field trip it gave me a chance to pray for Margaret's family and to remember her.
